Author Interview & Book Spotlight - Caroline Fardig

Today I'm welcoming author Caroline Fardig to my blog....

Tell us a bit about your writing – How long have you been writing? How many books have you written and in what genres?
I have been writing for about three years now. I have three books written (but not all proofread and polished) in my Lizzie Hart Mysteries series. I have another book started that’s not in the series, and it’s a chick-lit romance.

Where is your favourite spot in which to write? Garden? Study? Kitchen table? In bed?
I enjoy writing in my home office. I just redecorated it to be more colorful and fun, just like my writing. I find that I can really get down to business in there. I also enjoy writing outside, but so many times it’s too hot or too cold in Indiana to go outside at all!

How long does it take you to write the first rough draft of one of your books?
Usually about two months, if I really have the time to hit it hard. Lately, I haven’t had the time, and the book I’m working on now is taking forever!

Do you prefer to write with pen and paper or straight to the computer?
Definitely straight to the computer—I can keep up with my brain better if I type vs. write.  However, when I plot out my timeline of events, it’s always with pen and paper.

Do you plan a plot out in great detail before writing or start with the basics and let the book evolve that way?
I have to plot out my timeline by day, and I usually have a pretty good idea of the way I want scenes to go, but inevitably my books always take on a life of their own and go in the direction that they want to go!

Do you ever get part way through writing a book and find the characters are leading the story off in a different direction to how you had envisaged?
Yes, always!  I’m adamant about not changing the ending of my books, mainly because in writing mysteries, you have to stay on task or you’ll ruin the mystery, or worse, have it not make sense to your readers.  Sometimes it’s hard to get back on track after a tangent, but it all seems to work out in the end.

Who is your favourite character from all the books you have written and why?
I love my heroine, Lizzie Hart. She’s part me and part my daughter, so I feel a real connection to her. She also has the most fun of all of my characters, so it’s a hoot to write her scenes.

Is there such a thing as an average writing day for you and if so what is it?
Right now, I would love to have an average writing day. For some reason, I just can’t seem to get the time to sit down for hours on end and write. A lot of my time is spent marketing my books. That’s OK with me, because without proper marketing, you can’t sell books, but without writing, there would be no books to sell!

Advice to aspiring novelists?
Market, market, market.  It’s not always fun pushing your book all the time, but it is a necessary evil if you’re going to make it in the highly competitive world of publishing. Make sure that you have a quality product, and it will sell—but people have to know about it first. Social media is a great way to introduce yourself to the world, and don’t be shy!

About The Book:
The sleepy town of Liberty hasn’t seen murder in…well…ever. Residents are stunned when the body of a young woman is found strangled, and reporters at the Liberty Chronicle are thrilled, rather disturbingly, over the biggest news story to hit town this century.

Lizzie Hart has even bigger problems. Lately, she can’t seem to concentrate on her job as copy editor at the Chronicle with the new hunky investigative reporter, Blake Morgan, swaggering around the office. How can a girl work when she’s using all of her energy combating Blake-induced hot flashes and struggling to repress the giggly inner schoolgirl that’s constantly rearing her dorky head? It’s a good thing that Blake barely knows Lizzie exists.

After an odd string of events, however, Lizzie begins to wonder if Blake is really as fabulous as she has fantasized. When Lizzie and Blake find a co-worker dead, Blake’s personality changes completely—and not in a good way. Even though the police rule the death as an accident, Lizzie immediately suspects foul play and senses a connection to the recent murder. She is determined to bring the killer to justice, but is having some trouble getting her Nancy Drew on thanks to the pesky stalker she’s picked up—Blake Morgan. Wait, didn’t she want him to follow her around and pay attention to her? Not like this. Blake has turned from cool and smooth to cold and downright scary, making Lizzie wonder if he should be next on her suspect list.

About the Author:

CAROLINE FARDIG was born and raised in a small town in Indiana. Her working career has been rather eclectic thus far, with occupations including schoolteacher, church organist, insurance agent, funeral parlor associate, and stay-at-home mom. Finally realizing that she wants to be a writer when she grows up, Caroline has released her debut novel, IT'S JUST A LITTLE CRUSH, now a #1 Bestseller. She is currently hard at work churning out a second novel in the LIZZIE HART MYSTERIES series. She still lives in that same small town with an understanding husband, two sweet kids, two energetic dogs, and one malevolent cat.
